Target take upcyling downmarket

US mass retailer Target has commissioned Anna Sui create limited-edition tote bags made from used vinyl. A group of artists, including Josh Goldstein and Michael Anderson, have created nine ads for display in Times Square , which will then be reused,

Made from individual pieces of the billboards, 1,600 tote bags will be created, and will be constructed of 90% reused flex bulletin vinyl. Sui’s signature touches, such as black enamel studs, add a polish to the bags. The bags are $29.99 on sale from Target.com here:

The finished bags will ship in January 2010.

Freitag and others have been doing this for years, but at higher price points. It will be interesting to see the quality of the finished bags, and how durable they are..
